Lead Paragraph
Shares of Moderna Inc. (NASDAQ: MRNA) surged as much as 91% to a two-year high of $120.04 in premarket trading on Wednesday. The explosive market rally follows a historic announcement that the company’s experimental personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, developed in partnership with Merck & Co. (NYSE: MRK), successfully met its primary goals in a massive, late-stage Phase 3 clinical trial.

Main Story
The large-scale INTerpath-001 trial evaluated the individualized vaccine, known as intismeran, combined with Merck's blockbuster immunotherapy drug, Keytruda, in 1,137 patients with high-risk melanoma (skin cancer) whose tumors had been surgically removed.

According to the joint statement released early Wednesday, the combination treatment demonstrated a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in extending recurrence-free survival (RFS) compared to using Keytruda alone. Crucially, the study also hit its secondary endpoint of distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), meaning it effectively stopped the deadly skin cancer from spreading to other vital organs.

This marks the first time in medical history that a randomized Phase 3 trial has definitively proven the clinical benefit of an individualized mRNA-based cancer therapy, validating decades of research.

Industry and Medical Reaction
"Today's results represent a landmark moment for adjuvant melanoma treatment," said Professor Georgina Long, the study's principal investigator and medical director of the Melanoma Institute Australia.

Independent oncology pioneers are calling it a "science fiction turned reality" moment. Dr. Jedd Wolchok, director of the Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine, noted, "It really establishes personalized cancer vaccines as a new addition to standard cancer therapy."

Unlike traditional off-the-shelf shots, Moderna’s technology uses a made-to-order messenger-RNA approach. Scientists analyze the genetic mutations unique to each individual patient's tumor and create a custom vaccine tailored specifically to train that patient's immune system to destroy remaining cancer cells.

Wall Street Impact
The massive rally provides an enormous relief to Wall Street investors. Moderna’s stock has faced heavy downward pressure since its pandemic-era peak due to collapsing global demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Analysts note that this trial brings mRNA technology back to its original intended purpose: oncology.

Merck shares (NYSE: MRK) also jumped 7.7% to hit a new all-time high of $145.63 on the news. Barclays analysts recently projected that the personalized melanoma therapy could generate upwards of $3 billion in annual sales by 2035, with versions already being expanded to target lung, kidney, bladder, and pancreatic cancers.

What’s Next
Moderna President Stephen Hoge stated that the companies plan to present the full data set at an upcoming international medical meeting. Moderna plans to engage with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and global regulatory authorities immediately to file for expedited approval submissions.
